Choose a grinder by how you brew, not by the number of settings. Pour-over and drip need a consistent medium grind. Espresso needs fine steps and a grinder its maker sells for espresso. This page splits the choice into those two paths.

Quick picks

Picked from maker specs. Maker prices are dated in each section below. Not a hands-on test.

Which path are you on?

Pour-over path

Three ways in: a hand grinder, the lowest-priced electric burr grinder in our budget guide, or the grinder with more settings. The longer comparison is in budget burr grinders.

Timemore Chestnut C3S hand grinder

Maker’s price on Oct 18, 2026: $89.00 for the Standard version at Timemore. Or buy from Timemore

  • S2C660 stainless steel conical burr, metal body, about 700 g. The Amazon listing says about 25 g capacity and about 36 grind levels (checked Oct 18, 2026). Timemore’s C3 series page lists 20 g for the C3S, so plan on one or two cups per fill.

Good fit if: they brew one or two cups of pour-over, want a quiet grinder that needs no outlet, or travel.

Skip it if: they brew for a crowd every morning. An electric grinder is less work.

OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

Maker’s price on Oct 2, 2026: $109.99 at OXO. Or buy from OXO

  • 15 settings plus microsettings, 12 oz bean hopper. OXO’s booklet maps pour-over to settings 6–10. See the OXO spec page.

Good fit if: they still use pre-ground coffee or a blade grinder and brew drip or pour-over.

Skip it if: they are mainly after espresso. See the espresso grinder guide.

Baratza Encore

Baratza Encore

Maker’s price on Oct 2, 2026: $149.95 at Baratza. Or buy from Baratza

Good fit if: they brew drip, pour-over or French press and want more settings than the OXO.

Skip it if: espresso is the goal. Baratza sells the Encore ESP for that.

Espresso path

Three grinders their makers sell for espresso, from the lowest maker price in our set up to timed dosing. The longer comparison is in entry espresso grinders under $300, and the head-to-head is Encore ESP vs Ode Gen 2.

  • 40 mm conical steel M2 burrs, 300 g hopper, manual dosing. Baratza pitches it for espresso first. See Encore ESP vs Ode Gen 2.

Good fit if: they have an espresso machine with no built-in grinder.

Maker’s price on Oct 2, 2026: $199.95 in black ($249.95 with a wood lid and metal dial) at Fellow. Or buy from Fellow

  • 48 mm conical burrs, single-dose design. Fellow’s page describes a range from espresso to cold brew. That page says both “stepless” and “48 settings”, so check it before you buy.

Good fit if: the household brews both espresso and pour-over and weighs each dose.

Skip it if: they want a big hopper that holds a whole bag.

Good fit if: they make espresso most days and want timed dosing.

Skip it if: they mostly brew pour-over. Its maker price is the highest of these grinders.

What to check on the listing

None of this is a grind-quality ranking. Burrstack did not measure particle size, retention or noise. Specs are quoted from the makers’ pages.
